Taking A Family Road Trip? 4 Reasons To Linger Along The South Oregon Coast

The Oregon coast is one of the most beautiful destinations in the United States. And while this section of the state makes a wonderful road trip, it's even better when you can stop and spend some time.

To help you create just the right Oregon coast vacation, here are 4 great things to do along the southern coast.

Ride Jet Boats. The jet boats of Rogue River are a famously good time. Based out of quaint Gold Beach, this family adventure tour whisks you on a one-of-a-kind tour of the wilderness along the beautiful Rogue River. You can encounter wildlife and see pristine Oregon backcountry, all from the comfort of a guided boat tour. The jet boats retrace the historical mail delivery route to the remote town of Agness and will fill your kids' heads with tales of the Old West.

Go Whale Watching. Whale watching excursions are available all along the Oregon coast, and the south is a particularly good place to get good views. You can join a charter tour with local boat captains in Gold Beach or Newport. During migration times—especially during the late winter—you can often see passing whales from the roadside pullouts or even from seaside hotels, such as Pacific Reef Hotel, with a good pair of binoculars.

Take Photos. The whole state of Oregon is a great place to get out your camera and practice taking those great shots. No matter what the weather is, it makes for stunning photos. Walk along the many hiking trails along the south coastal area that start at the edge of Highway 101, or simply wander along the beach among the striking rocks. No two waves break quite the same, and so you'll never run out of photography subjects. If you need additional inspiration, start with the rusting hulk of the Mary D. Hume in Gold Beach or the amazing vistas of Cape Perpetua.

Go to the Aquarium. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport will thrill both kids and adults. You can get up close and personal with seals, sea otters, and even an octopus. Want great overnight fun? Take the kids on a behind the scenes tour or spend the night in the Aquarium and enjoy special morning activities. If you're short on funds, try the nearby, free Hatfield Marine Science Center.

No matter what your vacation style or who's in your family, you'll find great things to do for one, two, or more days along the south coast of Oregon.
